Understanding the P&L Statement
The Profit & Loss statement (also called Income Statement) shows your revenue minus expenses for a given period. It tells you whether your business is profitable and by how much. ZentBill generates this automatically from your sales, purchases, and expense records.
Generating the Report
To generate a Profit & Loss statement:
- 1Go to Reports > Profit & Loss from the sidebar
- 2Select the date range (current month, quarter, year, or custom)
- 3The report shows revenue, cost of goods sold, gross profit, expenses, and net profit
- 4Click 'Export' to download as Excel or PDF
Reading the Report
The P&L is structured in sections: Revenue (sales income), Less: Cost of Goods Sold (purchase cost of items sold), = Gross Profit, Less: Operating Expenses (rent, salaries, utilities), = Net Profit. A positive net profit means your business is making money.
Tip:Compare P&L reports across periods (month-over-month or year-over-year) to identify trends in revenue and expenses.
